The word Lent comes from an old English word for the season Spring. It is not primarily that Lent occurs or perhaps ends at the beginning of the Spring season. Rather, it is because Lent is called to be a new Springtime in our spiritual lives. Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (John 12:24)

Therefore, during this season we are called to enter into our own manner of dying to self so that we can experience resurrection. Jesus tells us regarding this, “Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in my steps.” (Luke 9:23)

One of the ways in which we do this is to take on some penance, ie- giving something up. Another powerful way to grow in God’s image is to take up some spiritual practice. This may include going to daily Mass, attending Stations of the Cross, celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, and increasing private prayer. Another fruitful way of denying ourselves and following the example of Jesus is to increase our acts of charity, We may give to the poor or those in need, and even treat our friends, relatives and coworkers with increased kindness and courtesy. All of this hopefully has as its result a sharing in the death and resurrection of Jesus, so that with the celebration of Easter we will rise to new life with the Lord.
