The Windows

The life of Jesus of Nazareth changed the world. He came in simplicity to save the human race from sin and grant to all a share in life everlasting. He remains the light of the world. This volume endeavors to present Christ’s life and light through an exposition of the stained glass windows of the parish church of St. Margaret of Scotland in Foley, Alabama. Beautiful stained glass captures the human heart. When glorious stained glass windows depict the life of our Blessed Savior, Jesus Christ, they not only capture the heart but elevate the soul to ponder the love of God and heaven itself. Therefore, the most beautiful and important of the sacred art at St. Margaret of Scotland Church is the stained glass windows. The windows were originally crafted in Munich, Germany in 1906 by Francis Xavier Zettler Studio. They were placed in Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This parish was closed in 2004 and St. Margaret of Scotland acquired them at that time. Joseph Beyer Studio in Philadelphia did a masterful job of completely restoring these windows and refitting them for our church. The borders for the scenes were changed from a Romanesque or rounded arch at the top of the window to a Gothic or pointed arch. The twelve scenes tell of the life of our Divine Savior, Jesus Christ. The angels at the top of the scene were drawn and crafted at Beyer Studio. Each angel is holding an item which pertains to the scene. Another addition is crown and thistle alternating window to window. The crown indicates that the patroness of our parish, St. Margaret was a queen. The thistle, being the official flower of Scotland, indicates her realm was Scotland.
