The Ascension of Jesus
Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, raised His hands, and blessed them. As He blessed them He departed from them and was taken up to heaven. They did Jesus homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God. Lk 24:50-53
Jesus’ last act on earth was that of blessing. He blessed His dear Mother. He blessed His closest friends. He blessed them to strengthen them for their mission; to spread the kingdom of God and the good news of Jesus to all the world.
The scriptures tell us that after the Ascension Jesus’ dear ones returned to the temple and there continually praised God. They returned to familiar surroundings and began their work. The same is true for every disciple of Christ. We witness to Christ in our family, in our schools and workplaces. We witness to Christ by our joy and our acts of charity. We witness to the blessing of Christ by returning a blessing rather than a curse when we are wronged. In short, we witness to the life of Christ in our world by becoming Christ in our world.
