The Crucifixion of Jesus
They took Jesus, and carrying the cross Himself He went out to what is called the place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him. Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Jn 19:16-18, 25
God works in mysterious ways. Could any human being come up with such a plan to save our souls from sin and death? The only-begotten Son of God was conceived of a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit. Every prophet foretold the Savior’s coming. Every human heart yearned for something more, another way of life, reconciliation. And thus ends the human life of the Savior of the world; death by crucifixion on a piece of timber. What a strange plan! Yet, this is God’s way and Jesus our Lord fulfilled the plan to the end.
He taught us to forgive and He forgave His executioners on the cross. He taught us to trust in the Father and he offered to the Father His will and His Spirit. He told us to take up our cross and He took His to Mount Calvary heedless, of the shame. He did this because He loves us. The price for our sins He paid with His own blood.
“We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you;
because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.”
