How does the Coptic church compare to the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox?

Coptic Christians are located primarily in Egypt. The word coptic denotes a particular rite of celebrating the Mass. There are many different rites in the Catholic Church. The Latin rite which we are in the Archdiocese of Mobile and at St. Margaret’s in Foley comprises the vast majority of Catholics in the world. However, other rites would include the Byzantine, Maronite, Melkite, Ruthenium, Ambrosian and many other rites. All of these rites celebrate, with Rome’s approval, the one Catholic Mass. There are Coptic Christians who are Catholic, that is united with Rome and Coptics who are Orthodox, that is separated from Rome. The Catholic Church recognizes the validity of Orthodox holy orders. Therefore, although the Coptic Orthodox are separated from the Pope we believe they have the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

When are the proper times to genuflect and bow at Mass?

It is proper to genuflect to the tabernacle when entering or exiting the church. The priest and those assisting him do the same; they genuflect when they enter the sanctuary at the beginning of Mass and when they exit the sanctuary at the end of Mass. There are two kinds of bows during Mass. There is the head bow and the bow of the body from the waist up called the profound bow. a. A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. A head bow is also made before receiving Holy Communion. When the person in front of you is receiving communion that is when each communicant should make a head bow. So as not to slow up the communion line. b. A bow of the body that is a profound bow is made to the altar during the Creed at the words, “

I‘ve heard there are married priests. Is that correct?

In the Archdiocese of Mobile there are two married priests; one is President of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile and the other is the Chaplain at Providence Hospital in Mobile. Both Father Bry Shields and Father Leo Weishaar are former Episcopal ministers. They converted to the Catholic Faith and were given special permission by Pope John Paul II, nearly 20 years ago to be ordained Catholic priests. In every instance in which a former protestant minister is ordained a Catholic priest special permission from the Pope is necessary. Much like the Eastern rites of the Catholic Church who allow for married priests these men may not be ordained as bishops.

Sometimes the priest handles the monstrance with bare hands and sometimes with covered hands. Why?

The priest covers his hands with the monstrance when he is offering the blessing with the Most Blessed Sacrament during Benediction.

Bulletin March 5, 2011

Lent ∙ A New Springtime

The word Lent comes from an old English word for the season Spring. It is not primarily that Lent occurs or perhaps ends at the beginning of the Spring season. Rather, it is because Lent is called to be a new Springtime in our spiritual lives. Jesus said,

“Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (John 12:24)

Therefore, during this season we are called to enter into our own manner of dying to self so that we can experience resurrection. Jesus tells us regarding this,

“Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in my steps.” (Luke 9:23)

One of the ways in which we do this is to take on some penance, i.e. giving something up. Another powerful way to grow in God’s image is to take up some spiritual practice. This may include going to daily Mass, attending Stations of the Cross, celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, and increasing private prayer. Another fruitful way of denying ourselves and following the example of Jesus is to increase our acts of charity. We may give to the poor or those in need, and even treat our friends, relatives and coworkers with increased kindness and courtesy. All of this hopefully has as its result a sharing in the death and resurrection of Jesus, so that with the celebration of Easter we will rise to new life with the Lord.

“To Be” March Baby Shower

March is our month to gather needed items for “To Be” in Fairhope. To Be provides assistance and education for new and expecting mothers in our area. There biggest need, by far, are car seats for infants under 20lbs (the kind that face the rear of the seat). They are also in need of pack-n-plays, swings, changing tables, diapers (Size 3), socks and booties. For the more expensive items, it is suggested that families or friends could pool their resources and donate these items as a group. You may leave your items in the vestibule of the church. There is a bassinet available for smaller items. Thank you for your help!

Lenten Reflection

The CYO, the young people of our parish, will meet on Sunday, March 27 after the 10:30am Mass (around 11:45am) at the Father Bede Center. We will enjoy lunch together followed by a Lenten talk offered by Father Zoghby. The afternoon will continue in the church with a chance for peaceful reflection and prayer in the presence of
